landlady

Foreshadowing is an advance sign or warning of what is to come in the future. The author of a mystery novel might use foreshadowing in the early chapter of his book to give readers an inkling of an impending murder.

“Now wait a minute,” he said. “Wait just a minute. Mulholland . . . Christopher Mulholland . . . wasn’t that the name of the Eton schoolboy who was on a walking tour through the West Country, and then all of a sudden . . .”

Foreshadowing is different to inferences because in my opinion foreshadowing gives clues about an event which is going to happen while infering something is thinking about something based on information. In this story foreshadowing is used in the sentence ending with all of a sudden which gives suspense. It is foreshadowing because it doesn't say what happened but you can probably realise that the boy died. However an example of inference is: the man wore a brand new suit, you can infer that he is a wealthy businessman because he is wearing a suit. They are also similar because both of them make you think with the information you get.

1. They had porches and pillars and four or five steps going up to their front doors, and it was obvious that once upon a time they had been very swanky residences.

The swanky looking businessman came out of the massive glass skyscraper, which was his workplace, and stepped on the the cold cement pavement.

2.On the other hand, a pub would be more congenial than a boardinghouse.

He talked to his teacher and as he talked he learnt that his teacher was more friendly and congenial.

3. Itself conjured up images of watery cabbage, rapacious landladies and a powerful smell of kippers.

After defeat he looked at his enemy and with his rapacious eyes a said his last words;

4. After dithering about like this in the cold fore 2 or 3 minute,
He dithered which path to take, so he wouldn't be late for his train to London.

5.Holding him , compelling him, forcing him to stay where he was
His mother compelled him not to come to the party.

6.The compulsion or, more accurately the desire to follow.
The compulsion was so strong he couldn't bare it, so he took the cookie.

7.Shaking her head and heaving a dainty little sigh.
The seaside was filled with dainty people including some elderly women.

8.There is nothing more Tantalizing then a thing like this that lingers just outside the borders of
linger.
The comic was filled with rons of tantalising pictures.

9.A whiff of a perrculiar smell that seemed to emanate from her person.
When he entered the perfume store a whiff of perfume entered his nose.

But the air was deadly cold and the wind was like a flat blade of ice on his cheeks.
This is an example of kinaesthetic imagery because it helps you to imagine what it would feel if you were in his shoes.

She looked exactly like the mother of one’s best school friend welcoming one into the house to stay for the Christmas holidays.
Visual imagery because it described how w she looked when she was welcoming him into her hotel.

I think that the landlady was going to poison him and stuff him. She was almost unsuccessful because Billy almost remembered what happened to the two people who were there before him but she cut him off. I think this because she already had two stuffed animals stuffed by herself in her living room and she also was saying that the two people before him were still here which could've meant that she stuffed them too. This explains that the landlady is a crazy woman that likes to stuff people.

I think the climax of the story is when Billy remembers something about the two men who where in this place before. This is the climax of the story because the land lady's secret was about to be discovered and then Billy could've been safe. This explains where the climax of the story
was.

I think that knowing the smell of burnt almonds  changes my meaning of the story massively because I know that the smell of burnt almonds is the smell of cyanide. Now I know that she was definitely trying to poison Billy due to the smell of cyanide. This explains that my point before about her being a crazy woman that stuffs people is true.

I enjoyed reading the story because it was interesting and it was exiting. The ending didn't suit me because I would've liked to know what happened next. my favourite part of the story is the moment where Billy almost found out the crazy lady's secret. In my opinion the story was interesting but the ending came too quickly for my liking.
